Airport transfers
Transfers to and from the airport are $22US per tuk tuk. The new airport is around one hour from central Siem Reap, hence the cost. Tour temples with me
Motorbike led tuk tuk is the most common way to see the temples near to Siem Reap
-
My motorbike is near new and there is no risk of breakdown. My tuk tuk can comfortably accommodate four adults, or a family of two adults and up to three children (four kids if they are small).
-
There are two temple "loops" in the Angkor Wat area. (1) The small loop (17 kms) which includes Angkor Wat and the big loop (23 kms) which includes temples that are a little towards the east.
-
It is common for people to do the small loop on day one and the big loop on day two
-
Each loop takes around six hours but this can differ depending on how long you spend at each temple, and other factors such as how comfortable you are in the heat.
-
One benefit of choosing me, is that my tours are flexible. We can start and finish as you wish, and you can feel free to take as long or as short as you want at each stop
-
What is the cost and what is included? The cost for the small loop is $15 US or 60,000 KHR. The big loop is $20 US or 80,000KHR. For each tour there is an extra $5 US charge for sunrise or sunset visit. These costs are fixed, and don't change if there are more people in your group.I supply a cooler with some free bottled water and chilled towels to help you refresh between stops. We can also make a stop at anytime if you wish to buy some soft drinks or beer for the cooler.
Other information about touring temples
TicketsTo access the temples you need to buy a pass from the government. It is easiest to do this online, although it is also possible to do this in person on the day. If you are purchasing online, please note that this must be done the day before you intend to visit. You will need to have a digital or print copy of your ticket with you, as this is checked by staff at the temples.
WeatherIt can be very hot touring the temples between January and April. It is important to drink lots of water, and wear sunscreen. I supply enough water for my guests, but there are also many stalls and small shops along the way if you need to refresh with a soft drink, beer, or coffee!MoneyWe will stop along the way for lunch but this is not included. Because these restaurants are near to the temples, they can be a little more expensive than in Siem Reap itself. Best to budget between $5-10 per person for food, drinks, and so on for the whole day.Larger GroupsIf your group is larger, this is no problem. I will simply organize another tuk tuk driver for you and we can all go together. Large groups such as this can be a lot of fun. The cost for the extra driver is the same as the cost for me.GuideI am not a registered guide. Of course, I know many things about the temples and their history but to become a registered guide you need to pass a course and pay an annual fee, which I cannot afford. This means that I cannot come into the temples with you, whereas a guide can. If you are wanting a guide please let me know as I have a network of excellent guides who I can use. The cost of an English guide will be around $40 US p/day, other languages around $50 Us p.day. This is a fixed cost and does not change according to the numbers in your group, even if we have two or more tuk tuk's.LanguagesI speak Khmer and English. If you are seeking a tour in a different language please get in touch. I have a network of trusted drivers and guides who can cater for most common languages.Final thoughtsIf you are unsure what you would like to do, I would recommend the following: Book two days with me and on the first day, do the small loop with Angkor Wat sunrise and a guide so that you can learn a little about what you are looking at. On the second day, do the big loop with a later start but without the guide. This way, you can sleep in a little and be refreshed for another big day. One day without the guide will save around $40 but will also allow you to feel a little free when looking at the sites. You can use this time to reflect a little on what you learned from your guide the previous day.On this (second) day, I can also take your for an extra special lunch at Preah Duk Village if you are fond of eating local food with locals (streetside BBQ roast pork). This is highly recommended!
Other things to do in and around Siem Reap
There is more to do in Siem Reap than just temples! Get in touch if you are interested in visiting any of the following attractions!
APOPO LANDMINE VISITOR CENTREI recommend a visit to Apopo. Here you can visit special African rats who are trained to detect landmines in Cambodia. These rats can can search an area the size of a tennis court in 30 minutes – whereas a human deminer with a metal detector can take up to 4 days. Apopo is around 10 mins out of Siem Reap and it costs $10 for entry to the visitor center. Here you will get to see the rats in action and learn about the amazing work they do. You can also hold the rat if you wish. Get in touch with me if you would like to visit!
BOTANIC GARDENSNear to APOPO are Siem Reap Botanic Gardens. These are free to enter and it is worth having a stroll if you like tropical style gardens. A short visit is all that is necessary but it is nice and peaceful here
ANGKOR ZIPLINEIf you are wanting a bit of a thrill, the zipline might be for you. The zipline is located in the temple complex around 30 minutes from central Siem Reap.
OTHER THINGS TO DO...If the big and small loops are not enough for you I can take you to some of the more distant temples (Bunteay Srey, Bunteay Samré). These are around one hour from town and the cost is $25, with water and refreshing towel included
-
I can also take you to Beng Mealea
temple which is around 90 minutes from town. The cost is $40, with water and refreshing towel included
-
If you would like a tour around Siem Reap town itself, the cost if $15 and this includes free beer and water. This can be great if you have just arrived and are wanting to get your bearings. A similar trip but around the countryside is $25 including beer and water.
-
I can also recommend a trip to a local Khmer Noodle making factory. This is near to Preah Dak Village which is also near Banteay Srei Temple. Here you can watch locals as they make Cambodian rice noodles. Visiting in free (although a $2-3 US tip is appreciated), and you make the noodles for $7 US. The trip there and back is $15 and can include local temples if you like. This is a nice option if you are wanting to do something a little different to temples!
WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO TEMPLES?
Siem Reap is known for its beautiful and interesting temples. However after several days of temple watching (and walking) you may be interested in something different. This is a simple itinerary that will get you out and about and enjoying some of the other sites near Siem Reap. It is flexible and we can change or add things according to your taste. Cost is $15 total US for me and my tuk tuk, additional costs as below.
Morning pick up at your hotel in my tuk tuk.
Quick stop for local coffee at a Khmer cafe-we can also stop at a convenience store if you want to grab some refreshments for the day (at your expense).
Visit APOPO Rat-Landmine Visitor Centre, just outside of Siem Reap. Learn how HeroRATs are trained to safely detect landmines, saving countless lives and learn a little about Cambodia's landmine history.Experience a live demonstration of their unique abilities. Entry Fee: $10 USD per person. Pro Tip: This is a great chance to support an impactful cause by purchasing a souvenir from their shop.
Visit nearby botanic gardens. Entry is free. Nice for a quiet stroll through traditional St East Asian gardens. Perfect for photographs.
Short drive then traditional family-run Khmer Noodle making. Watch and learn about how noodles are made (for a small tip) or participate in making noodles for $7 USD per person.
Onward to Lunch at a Roadside BBQ Roast Pork Stall. Indulge in a foodie’s dream: succulent BBQ roast pork and sausage served with local sides, including beer if you wish. End the meal with Palm Sugar cake, a sweet treat beloved in Cambodia. Cost is around $5-7 US per person. Pro Tip: Pair your meal with a sugarcane juice or iced coconut water for the full local experience. Beer is also available.
Return to Siem Reap and relax as you’re driven back to your hotel, reflecting on a day rich in culture, history, and culinary delights.
Eat and exercise Siem Reap
There are many good restaurants in and around Siem Reap. You can visit these independently, or let me know if you need a ride, or would like to include one or more in a tour.I highly recommend Tevy's Place if you are wanting very affordably priced authentic Khmer cuisine served with a smile ($2-4 dollars per plate). There is also a heartening story behind this restaurant (I won't spoil this for you). This restaurant is walkable from the Pub Street area or you can get a Grab for $1-2 dollars.
I can also recommend Maom Khmer Cuisine. This place is wonderful although a little more pricey (around $6-8 dollars per plate). It is very special though, and the surroundings are very nice. This place is around 5-6 mins tuk tuk from Pub Street, central Siem Reap.
Amazon Angkor Restaurant offers buffet style dinner with a traditional Apsara show. Ticket includes hotel pick up and drop off. This is geared to tourists who are wanting to experience a cultural show with dinner
Preah Dak VillageThis is a street near to the "big loop" that contains a number of streetside restaurant's. If you want to sample good and cheap fresh local food, I recommend a visit here, perhaps while doing a temple tour. The road side roast pork is a specialty of this street. It is fresh, clean, and delicious. If you are lucky, you will be the only foreigner eating there!
Exercise
Siem Reap is lovely to walk around, especially if you've just come from busy Phnom Phen. I recommend taking a stroll around the river as there is lots of shade and a little less traffic. Visiting Wat Bo can be a nice excursion in this area too.
If you need something a bit more intense or structured, I recommend Angkor Fitness. This is an air conditioned gym that is a short walk from pub street (or a $1-2 Grab). It is $3 US to enter for a single pass and this includes a towel. They have a good setup with all you need for a good workout, and a smoothie/coffee/cafe onsite. Below you can see the gym in relation to sub street (bottom left corner) and the river walk, which is nice.
